Eastside Elementary’s 1st Grade students are taking learning beyond the classroom through an exciting new partnership with Wild Grace Recycling of Cody! Throughout the year, students will explore an important question: how can we reduce waste and take better care of our school and community?
Real Careers. Real Problems. Real Learning.
Working alongside local professionals, students will learn about recycling, conservation, natural resources, and careers in waste and resource management. Even more importantly, they won’t just learn about the work, they’ll do the work. Students will help develop and manage recycling efforts within the school, sort and examine materials, ask questions of local experts, gather information, collaborate with classmates, and use what they learn to help solve an authentic community problem.
Standards-Based Learning in Action
This work is intentionally connected to Wyoming State Learning Standards across multiple content areas: K-2 Science and Engineering as students identify a real problem and consider solutions; English Language Arts through collaborative conversations, shared research, and writing; and Social Studies and Career and Vocational Education as students explore local careers and see teamwork and problem solving used in the workplace.

“This is project-based, standards-aligned learning in action: science, literacy, social studies, career exploration, problem solving, and service all coming together around meaningful work.”

Classroom to Career Starts Early
At Eastside, Classroom to Career starts early. Students are learning that even as 1st graders, they can solve real problems, serve their community, and make a difference.
